How does software optimization work?

When your vehicle arrives at Powerlab, we first perform a full visual inspection to identify any obvious issues. We then review the service history to ensure the car is fully up to date with maintenance and servicing.

After that, we scan all control modules in the vehicle for fault codes to detect hidden problems and, in some cases, even check when codes were last cleared. On selected platforms — such as the Audi RS6 C7 — we also analyze misfire counters and engine data to identify potential issues like weak valve springs or other common platform-related problems before tuning begins.

Next, we read the vehicle's original software and verify the current software version. This allows us to determine the best and safest optimization strategy for your specific car. In certain cases, we may recommend updating or downgrading the software version to one we have extensive experience tuning and validating on vehicles already running successfully on the road.

Before any performance increase is made, we perform real-world datalogging under full throttle on the road or highway. This allows us to monitor how the engine performs with the factory software and determine whether the vehicle is healthy enough for additional power.

Once everything is approved, we custom-build the software based on your goals and driving preferences — whether you want a more aggressive setup with increased boost pressure while staying within safe tolerances, or a smoother and more conservative calibration.

We then continue testing, revising, and refining the software until the vehicle performs optimally according to the targeted setup. If requested, we can also carry out performance testing and verification runs.
